The Economic Development Unit (EDU) within the Dunedin City Council aims to influence our local economy through business development, industry/cluster development and projects that aim to improve the "economic environment" for business. The unit employs industry specialists, and co-owns the UPSTART Business Incubator (with the University of Otago and Otago Polytechnic). It also offers settlement support services and is the regional partner for Technology New Zealand. The EDU has developed a range of innovative support initiatives including the Research Support Fund which won an International Economic Development Council award in 2008. EDU has also been a finalist in the Vero Support Awards in 2007 and 2009.
